My SDI, My Monday With Inspiration: Mastering Your Emotions

In this edition, the topic discussed is Mastering Your Emotions which is interestingly presented by Royke and Pika

According to the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia, emotion is an outburst of feelings that develop and recede in a short time, psychological and physiological states and reactions (such as joy, sadness, emotion, love), subjective courage. Emotional intelligence refers to a person's ability to recognize, understand, and manage their own emotions and the emotions of others. This is an important aspect of emotional intelligence, which can affect interpersonal relationships, decision-making, and overall well-being.

There are several things related to the importance of emotional intelligence in the ASN environment, namely:

Improving the Quality of Public Services

ASN often interact directly with the public in the context of public services. The quality of service provided is not only determined by technical competence, but also by the ability to empathize, understand needs, and handle public emotions wisely. ASN who have high EQ tend to be able to provide better services, increase public satisfaction, and build more positive relationships.

Building Effective Teamwork

In a complex ASN environment, teamwork is essential to achieving common goals. ASN with high EQ tend to be better able to work together harmoniously, manage conflict well, and contribute to a positive work atmosphere. They can understand the feelings and needs of their colleagues, thus facilitating productive and innovative collaboration.

Supporting Effective Leadership

Emotional intelligence is also crucial in the context of leadership in the ASN environment. A leader with high EQ tends to be better able to motivate, inspire, and guide their subordinates well. They can read and respond appropriately to emotional dynamics within the team, build trust, and create an inclusive work environment.

Managing Stress and Work Pressure

ASN often face high pressure and stress in carrying out their duties, especially those related to the interests of society and the country. High EQ helps them to manage stress more effectively, stay calm in difficult situations, and find the right solutions better. This has a positive impact on their mental well-being and productivity.

Improving Compliance and Integrity

Integrity and compliance with rules and ethical values are principles that must be upheld by ASN. High EQ can help them to stick to these principles, even in situations where pressure or temptation to act unethically may arise. They are better able to control impulses and make decisions that are in accordance with the moral standards expected of an ASN.

Emotional intelligence is a valuable asset in the complex and dynamic ASN environment. By strengthening EQ, ASN can improve the quality of public services, build harmonious working relationships, support effective leadership, manage stress better, and strengthen organizational integrity. Therefore, investment in developing EQ among ASN must be a priority to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of quality public services.

There are several things we can do to recognize and deconstruct emotions, namely:

  1. Recognize Your Emotions and Label Their Triggers. Ask yourself, what are you feeling? When did you start feeling that way? What caused you to feel that way?
  2. Find Triggers. Understand the situations or things that often trigger emotional reactions. By knowing these triggers, you can be better prepared to deal with them
  3. Observe the Effects and Impacts of Your Feelings. Learning to recognize these manifestations can help you detach yourself from emotions. For example, if you are anxious, you may feel your heart racing, your chest tightening, or your heart pounding. Understand what impact it will have on the environment if these feelings/emotions are not controlled. Think of the Consequences: Consider how your actions can affect yourself and others.
  4. Use Breathing Techniques. Deep Breathing: Take a deep breath, hold it for a moment, then exhale slowly. This helps calm the body and mind. Count Breaths: Try counting to four while inhaling, hold it for four seconds, and exhale for four seconds. Meditation and Mindfulness: Mindfulness exercises can help you stay present and calmer in the face of emotions. Reframing: Try to see a situation from a different perspective to change how you feel about it.
  5. Give Yourself Time. Don’t Rush: If you’re feeling very emotional, give yourself time before reacting. Try to calm down for a while before making a decision or responding.
  6. Join a Support Group. Talking to Others: Sometimes, sharing your feelings with friends or family can help relieve emotional tension. Seek Professional Help: If you’re having trouble controlling your emotions, consider talking to a therapist who can provide additional support.

If you’re feeling angry, here are some things you can do:

  1. Take deep breaths
  2. Count to 10 slowly
  3. Use “I feel” statements
  4. Squeeze a stress ball
